Getting to Know the Duo of ethical muse

We’ve turned the tables on the co-founders and decided to ask them the questions this time. Come along as we get to know each half of ethical muse a bit better.

Christina Decker

Favorite holiday destination? Paris

What’s on your iPod? I like a bit of everything and have so many favorite songs…you’ll find anything, from the soundtrack of Les Miserables, to Eminem and everything in between.

Favorite jet-lag remedy? I wish I had a secret remedy to share! Trying not to nap during the day, no matter how early I wake up, works if I can keep my eyes open. It’s a challenge!

I never leave home without…. My iPhone, reading glasses, Purell and a pack of gum.

5 items you never travel without (besides your passport)? iPhone, reading glasses, Purell, gum and my ethical muse cork travel pouches. Oh, and my lucky driftwood. I guess that’s 6 items…

What does the word sustainability mean to you?  Sustainability means “extended support”; supporting/helping people, the environment and the planet for the long-term. It’s important to find ways to practice sustainability that work with one’s own lifestyle, in big ways or small. It’s not one-size fits all, and it looks different to everyone. Choosing what works for yourself is what matters, otherwise you won’t sustain the practice!

Personally, I take a holistic view and feel it’s important to not only help others and the planet, but to also take time to sustain ourselves, caring for our body, mind and soul.

One way you personally plan to incorporate (or currently channel) sustainability into your lifestyle choices? With ethical muse we strive to bring awareness of different ways one can practice sustainability in their own life. Offering suggestions and products that readers can adopt if the suggestions resonate with them. We are all about choices and no judgement. At home, I purchase organically whenever possible and I recycle. Also, I brew my own tea every morning and use my reusable Starbucks venti-size cup (complete with green straw) to drink my iced tea. I mostly use paraben-free beauty products and am slowly trying to eliminate other harmful ingredients from my beauty regime as well.

Favorite App? Instagram.

What are you reading? I am double fisted at the moment, reading Lauren Groff’s Fates and Furies: A Novel, and destressifying, by davidji.

What’s your typical weekday routine? Wake between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. Wash up. Head downstairs to make my iced green tea. Once I drop my son at school the day varies, but usually involves working on ethical muse, cardio, a stretch session, errands and possibly catching up with a friend at some point. I also try to take 10 minutes out of my day to meditate.

Early bird or night owl? Early bird.

Thoughts on responsible fashion? In a perfect world, I love the idea of having a closet full of sustainable clothing but options can be limited. I do my best to be aware of where and how the things I purchase are made. I don’t always make the perfect choice, but I try to weigh it out and am always mindful of my choices. Responsible fashion can be so subjective and filled with judgment. ethical muse is striving to change that with our mantra of just becoming aware, making choices that are right for you and not judging others for their choices.

What or who inspires you? Other women inspire me. It can be anyone, from a celebrity who has started a new initiative to help improve the world in some way, or it can be an everyday woman who is just doing their best to make positive choices and balance their life the best they can.

Which song is best suited for the sound-track of your life? Hell Yeahby Neil Diamond. The title may throw you, but I’m a lyrics girl. These lyrics resonate with me.

Favorite dessert? It’s a toss-up between ice cream and creme brûlée.

Favorite holiday destination? Portugal

What’s on your iPod? Since we have a family iCloud plan, there is everything from country to indie; pop to Barbra Streisand.

Favorite jet-lag remedy? Dreaded jet-lag! The only downside to my love of travel. I don’t wear sunglasses the first couple of days after arriving in a time zone outside of a 6 hour time change. However, I do like to nap, which probably doesn’t help. Hence, see my answer to the question below: early bird or night owl…

I never leave home without…. My iPhone and a bottle of water.

5 items you never travel without (besides your passport)? iPhone, computer, ethical muse travel bags (one holding international travel plugs and the other currency), and my “Traveller’s Prayer.”

What does the word sustainability mean to you? On a large-scale, ensuring we make choices without jeopardizing the environment, economy and people of our planet. Being conscious that our choices today will ensure longevity. On a personal level, safeguarding our mental and physical well-being.

One way you personally plan to incorporate (or currently channel) sustainability into your lifestyle choices? By starting ethical muse, we believe we are at the forefront of designing corporate accessories from sustainable materials. Our blog brings awareness on how sustainability impacts our lives, the choices we make, and the upturn towards luxury eco-lifestyles. On a personal level, it means having a no-guilt complex when it comes to sustaining my mental and physical well-being and always carving out time to do the things I love, such as my favorite outdoor activities.

Favorite App? What’sApp. An easy way to stay in contact with my international family.

What are you reading? George R.R. Martin’s Saga, A Song of Ice and Fire and Lonely Planet’s, The Pacific Northwest’s Best Trips – 33 Amazing Road Trips.

What’s your typical weekday routine? Every day is different. It depends if I’m at my home-base in Dubai or traveling.

Early bird or night owl? Definitely a night owl.

Thoughts on responsible fashion? I aim to join the slow fashion movement. I like to buy quality pieces that will stay in my wardrobe and am a huge advocate of Livia Firth’s #30wears rule. I love when labels describe their supply chain, and I enjoy buying local. At ethical muse, we believe in a “no-judgement” policy. We want to share with readers the businesses and brands we find incorporating this culture, but always with the understanding that choices are personal.

What or who inspires you?  Nature at its best – the ocean, waterfalls and fresh, organic, juicy peaches.
